Caring for your products
All spray treated joinery products that I make are fully treated for the first 18 months of their lifetime and are fine to be left outside all year round.
After 18 months, I would suggest that you treat products with a good quality wood stain such as products made by Sikkens or Sadolin. You should then retreat every 2-3 years depending on the harshness of the weather. If you choose to cover your bench or seat set with plastic sheeting over the winter months, you should make sure that air is still able to circulate around the item to prevent the wood from sweating. With planters I would highly recommend that you line them with polythene prior to planting them up.
Pressure treated/tanalised timber is a lifetime preservative treatment. The preservative is forced deep into the timber under pressure in a vacuum and penetrates below the surface. With pressure impregnated timber the chemicals are permanently bonded to the cell structure of the wood at a molecular level, Tanalith E is a widely used water based version so pressure treated wood is often described as tanalised. No further preservative treatment is ever needed, however if you want a coloured finish you can paint over pressure treated or tanalised wood with normal wood preservative in any colour.

Please note that timber is a natural material and splits or cracks known as checks may appear. This is due to changes in humidity and temperature which cause timber to expand/contract as moisture content changes. Any changes that may occur are normal and in no way affect the strength or durability of the products. A coat of oil-based preservative or stain will give additional protection against splitting.
